Presidency and the Press
Laurel Kolacny, future Editor-In-Chief of Abilene High School’s newspaper, the Booster, is determined to uphold the tradition of the publication, make this volume its best, and continue with her aspirations as a journalist.
As a third-year staff member, and now Editor, Kolacny has shown that dedication truly does pay off.
After brief exposure to the publication in the 8th grade, thanks to her older brother bringing the Booster home after school, Kolacny showed interest in journalism. This interest pushed her to enroll in the prerequisite journalism class. After completing this year-long course, the real work began. Selected to join the newspaper staff as a sophomore, a true feat in itself, Kolacny began climbing the ranks, eventually settling at the top.
As next year’s Editor-In-Chief, Kolacny has already identified objectives for the publication. Less typos and motivation of staff members will be an important aspect of the Booster. “I like to be liked,” said Kolacny. Gaining the respect of her fellow staff members is vital; for Kolacny, setting a good example proves to be most useful. “I’m willing to write anything,” said Kolacny.
With this exposure and willingness in the field of journalism, Kolacny hopes to major in just that at Kansas University. With this degree in hand, her aspirations of being a photojournalist will not be far from reach.
“I would like to focus on the common man,” said Kolacny. Exposing the untapped beauty in the simplicity of everyday life is this journalist’s true ambition.
Her passion, drive, and determination are evident. This serious journalist means serious business; Kolacny predicts that this passion will be evident in the Booster.
