Presidency and the Press student reporters were honored with the chance to interview Marlin Fitzwater Tuesday, July 19 at the Franklin Pierce University campus in Manchester.
The days prior to the interview were filled with constant reminders of how important this meeting would be, since Fitzwater has donated funding and created opportunities for the school.
After a brief speech from Fitzwater summarizing his roots as a farm boy to his journey to big time success, the interviews began.
When asked about his opinion on how technology has affected the job of Secretary of Press, Fitzwater spoke about how growing information flow over the Internet has opened opportunities for new communication among countries, making it easier for access to recent news.
Although Fitzwater included many positive aspects of rise in technology, there are also some negative aspects to it.
“We’re seeing a whole new genre in journalism due to technology” he said. “ A lot of our newspapers are going under. We’ve become a society so tuned in and accustomed to using Facebook and Twitter that people just don’t want to take time to read through newspapers anymore.”
