Emily Casey finds her passion for journalism
by Timothy Wood
This week Emily Casey continues in her love for journalism at Presidency and the Press, but she hasn’t always been interested in that field.
In her freshman year while taking a creative writing course, she decided that she would take journalism the following year. She knew she liked creative writing and wanted to become more versatile with her writing. She needed an elective course, and she liked reading the paper. Once she started taking journalism, she never looked back.
This past year as a sophomore she was a reporter for the paper, and this upcoming year she will take a more important role as the news editor. She also aspires to be the editor-in-chief for her senior year.
“I’m looking forward to growing in my skills as a writer and having the experience of being an editor,” said Casey.
But journalism is not the only place she has honed her leadership skills. She is also a class officer, a student council member, and a National Honor Society member. She is also involved in a club called Big Buddies, which gives her the opportunity to be a good high school role model to younger children.
She has not yet started looking at colleges, but she knows she is interested in studying journalism or law, and she does want to try to find a way to incorporate both.
Casey’s experience at Presidency and the Press has broadened her horizons and helped her find what she wants to do.
“This program is definitely teaching me how I need to be writing a lot of other forms of journalism that I haven’t been exposed to yet.”
