Ronald Cooper finds his place in politics
by Colin Dudgeon
For Ronald Cooper, the Presidency and the Press program is not just another step in his path to a political career, it’s a chance to learn more about the media that covers aspiring politicians like him.
He developed his interest in politics after learning about economics in 6th grade and then becoming interested in the government’s role in the economy. After learning about politics he then proceeded to join the debate team in his freshman year. “There’s a sense of excitement that goes along with it,” Cooper said.
After transferring to Pinkerton Academy for his sophomore year, Cooper did a job shadow of State Senator Nancy Stiles, where he learned about parliamentary procedure by watching committee hearings and meeting state officials. After talking to the teacher who had recommended the state house job shadow to him, he found out about the P&P program, and decided to take another detour into the world of the press, though he’s confident that he will stick with politics.
“It’s something that I’ll stick with, it’s fun,” he said.
He hopes to do an internship in Washington DC next summer, and after he graduates high school he wants to go to college majoring in political science and then to law school to provide the foundation for his political career.
